British Vintage Wireless and Television Museum

The Museum committee has decided that the Museum must close for the foreseeable future. This is due to the current coronavirus pandemic.

The committee has a duty of care to all our members to consider their wellbeing. To all our friends and visitors, we look forward to welcoming you again once this pandemic is over.


Harpenden Public Halls, Southdown Road, Harpenden, Hertfordshire AL5 1PD

  • Swapmeet and Auction: Doors open at 9:30am, tickets on sale from 9am. Stallholder entry from 8:45am. Auction starts at approximately 1pm.
  • Swapmeet, Auction and AGM: As above, but with the AGM in the small hall starting at midday

Harpenden is served by the A1081 (St Albans Road). From the M1 turn off at Junction 9 onto the A5183 Follow this until you come to a roundabout (about 2 miles) and take the first exit (left) onto the B487. Follow this road until you come to a mini roundabout (about 1 ½ miles) and take the first exit (left) off the roundabout, a short distance from this will be a further roundabout. Take the last exit (right). A few yards down this road take the first left turning. This is Southdown Road/Arden Grove. The hall is right at the end of this turning.

Parking is to the front and rear of the hall via Arden Grove and surrounding side roads. There are also a small number of disabled parking bays at the front of the hall.

For those using public transport, the BVWS Harpenden event is just 3 minutes walk from Harpenden railway station. There is also a good bus service from London.

This is only about a 1.5 miles away from the old Lowton hall (which has now been demolished).

From the M6:

  • Leave at J23 and head towards Manchester.
  • Second left, onto B5207.
  • Right onto Thirlmere Road.
  • Left at T junction onto Ulswater Road.
  • Right onto Rivington Avenue.

From the other way:

  • A58 to Platt Bridge.
  • A573 Through Abram, becomes Wigan Road.
  • At the Junction with B5207 turn left onto B5207 Lowton Road.
  • Left onto Thirlmere Road.
  • Left at T junction onto Ulswater Road.
  • Right onto Rivington Avenue.

For those using public transport the event is a 40 minute taxi ride from Manchester, 10 minute taxi ride from Newton-le-Willows railway station, and 25 minute taxi ride from Warrington Bank Quay railway station. Local bus services are also available with a 10 minute walk to the event.

From M4 Junction 16, take the Wootton Bassett turning (A3102). Continue to follow the signs for Wootton Bassett. Once in Wootton Bassett (3 miles from J16) you come into main town area where there is a raised town hall (black and white building on stilts). At that point turn left into Station Road, (sign posted for Broad Town / Broad Hinton) and then the hall is 500 yards on your left, on the corner of a crossroads where you need to turn left into Tanners Close to access the car park.

For those using public transport, Royal Wootton Bassett is a 15 minute taxi drive from Swindon railway station.
